San Francisco 49ers Look To Improve Via Draft After Free Agency Moves; Await Schedule Release

The San Francisco 49ers have begun a remodeling process this offseason.  The second half of the 2014 season was one of turmoil as the team dealt with the departing saga of coach Jim Harbaugh.  The 49ers finished 3rd in the NFC West with a divisional record of 2-4 and an overall record of 8-8, missing the playoffs for the first time since 2010.  Aside from a poor record, San Francisco did excel on the defensive side of the football last season.

Their ability to disrupt opposing quarterbacks was due to having the 5th-best passing defense in the NFL as they limited opponents to an average of 220.7 passing yards per game.  Similar success was seen in stopping the run, giving up an average of only 100.8 yards to rushers per game.  This success has been helped by new head coach, Harbaugh’s replacement, Jim Tomsula.  Tomsula is no stranger to the organization, as he spent 8 seasons as the 49ers defensive line coach.  During this period, he was instrumental in developing the now strong defense.  Tomsula also previously took the reigns of the team for the final game of 2010, when he coached them to a 34-7 win over the Arizona Cardinals.

San Francisco has made multiple moves to address their offensive passing game thus far this free agency as they ranked 30th in the NFL.  Averaging 191.4 yards in the air per game, the 49ers have added two wide receivers in hopes of giving quarterback Colin Kaepernick some move explosive targets.  Adding deep threat Torrey Smith, previously with the Baltimore Ravens, on a five-year and former Minnesota Vikings wide out Jerome Simpson on a two-year contract.  The pair will join last season’s leading receiver Anquan Boldin who registered 83 receptions for 1,062 yards.  The 49ers have also added a running back to fill the void left by Frank Gore.  Gore who signed with the Indianapolis Colts this offseason, had lead the Niners in rushing during every season since 2005.  Veteran Reggie Bush, will team up with Carlos Hyde and Kendall Hunter to give them a three-headed attack in the backfield.

The 2015 Draft gives San Francisco a chance to replace Patrick Willis and Chris Borland as duo of retirements leaving a large hole in the linebacker position.  However, they have already taken a step by signing Darnell Dockett on a two-year contract.  Additionally, adding Shareece Wright to bolster the secondary will allow them to explore the other areas of need deeper.

The departure of left guard Mike Iupati and the fact that right guard Alex Boone is in the final year of his contract means they must re-up pocket protection for Kaepernick.  The 49ers could use one of their middle round draft picks to select potential replacements such as John Miller, Louisville, and or Arie Kouandjio, Alabama.  The other area of interest worth basing their first round on is the defensive line.  Currently holding the 17th overall draft pick selecting either Eddie Goldman, Florida State, or 6-7 Arik Armstead, Oregon, would give them youth to anchor the line and continue their ability to stop the run year in and year out. Regardless of who the 49ers select, TiqIQ will be the place to go for 49ers tickets this season.
