Why I think the 49ers need this win

Thanksgiving is upon us and here we are a lot to be thankful for if you’re a 49er fan.  The team is still in the playoff hunt after what has been a very up and down season.  Injuries that could have proven detrimental to the team have been weathered and the rookies have been performing at a very high level.

Yet here we are facing a fork in the road and the result of tonight’s game will not only have an implication on this season but on the future of this team. If they lose this game their playoff hopes greatly diminish because they would now be forced to win out the remainder of their games with a road trip to Seattle still on the horizon. And up to this point winning in Seattle has eluded Kapernick and the 49ers, but somehow the result of this game at least to me feels like is tied to the future of Harbaugh.

We have all heard the rumors about Harbaugh’s future, believe me I think that letting him walk would be a great mistake. For the first time in a very long time this team has enjoyed a very high level of success.  Letting go of Harbaugh will not only set the team back but it would in my opinion set Kaepernick’s development back.

How can the outcome of one game determine the future of one of the teams most successful coaches since George Siefert? The 49ers have been to three straight NFC championship games and one Super Bowl appearance, and it seems that every season ends within yards of reaching that elusive sixth championship. Not making the playoffs I believe will push the tension that I believe exists between Harbaugh and the front office over the edge and will somehow justify his dismissal.

Now the Niners could win this game and go on to hoist the Lombardi trophy in February and still they let Harbaugh go.  At that point the only justification would be that they were not able come to terms on an extension and they cut ties both parties achieving what they set out to do, and that was to win a championship.  So eat your dinner early, take your heartburn medicine because this game means so much more than just the rivalry or the playoffs, I believe they are playing for the future of coach Harbaugh and the team.
