49er News From The NFL Combine

The 2014 NFL Scouting Combine is under way and with a few more days of testing left, the 49ers front offices have remained quiet in regards to their respective free-agents and contract re-negotiations. This leads many to believe we should hear or see action starting after the completion of the NFL Combine this Tuesday.

In the meanwhile, the 49ers front office is most likely evaluating the incoming crop of draftees with an eye looking for that “diamond in the rough”, a potential late round steal, or someone they may look to acquire to replace a current 49er. This is most likely the reasoning behind the delay in any negations with free-agents as scouts flood the combine, looking to evaluate players before making decisions about current player situations.

But that hasn’t stopped the early reports from getting out. This past Friday (Feb.21) reports leaked that the 49ers front office and quarterback Colin Kaepernick are in the preliminary stages of contract talks. What does that mean? Nothing yet, It’s just talk but good to hear. With Kaepernick entering the fourth and final year of his initial rookie contract, I’m sure the 49ers want to get a deal done so there are no distractions heading into training camp.

There have also been reports of negotiations with free-agent wide receiver Anquan Boldin and even Donte Whitner. The 49ers front office has said re-signing both players is a priority. Anquan has remained quiet publicly about the whole process however Whitner has often used Twitter to express his feelings. Here is the latest post from Whiter, possibly speaking to 49ers front office personnel.

The headline that may have shocked you was a blip of a report, a rumor I should say, of a possible trade between the 49ers and Cleveland Browns that involved Jim Harbuagh, draft picks and who knows what else.

I’m pretty sure this is the face Harbaugh made when he had to explain the situation to the media.

When I initially saw the report on ESPN NFL Live, I about laughed, but apparently there was some truth to it, but not much. Eventually both Jim Harbaugh and 49ers CEO Jed York had to speak about the alleged deal this weekend.

Whatever the reports may say, Jed York officially responded to ProTalkFootball via Twitter. Check the exchange below. The Browns have obviously since moved on, hiring Mike Pettine instead. Neither side offered any other comment.

Interesting to note, the Cleveland Browns were Jim’s favorite team growing up.

This is the NFL off-season. Welcome to the next 3 months of NFL life.
