Today the 49ers placed starting fullback Bruce Miller on IR with a fractured Scapula, ending his season. Miller will be hard to replace, and the 49ers are likely to employ a fullback by committee approach for the rest of the season. To fill Miller’s roster spot the 49ers signed Will Tukuafu who was with the team for the last two seasons before being released on September 10th of this year.
Anthony Dixon will probably get the starting nod at FB, with Tukuafu coming in for short yardage situations and also fill in for Miller on special teams. The team also has Derek Carrier and Vance McDonald who can fill the H-back role that was so well filled by Delanie Walker last year to give the offense a little bit more flexibility in Miller’s absence. San Francisco is likely to run more plays from 3 WR sets, something that they have not done much of this season.
In order to fill Miller’s shoes Mario Manningham, Vance McDonald, and Anthony Dixon will all have to step up and help create some blocking and additional offense. Miller was third on the team with 25 receptions for 243 yards.
