Three in a Row for the 49ers

I’ve stared over that figure for quite some time since the San Francisco 49ers defeated the Arizona Cardinals 32-20.  It really is quite remarkable when you think about it.  The 49ers have experienced an avalanche of injuries this season that would bury most teams.  But after a myriad of injuries that would constitute multiple seasons, Jim Harbaugh and staff has this team sitting at a stable spot in the standings.

The game against the Cardinals wasn’t exactly anything to write home to Mom about.  But with the depletion on this roster, it was a thing of beauty.  And this limited roster gave us something that last year’s San Francisco 49ers team, the Super Bowl runner up, never gave its fans.  They gave us a three game winning streak.

Without a complete core of receivers to provide Colin Kaepernick options in the passing game, he turned to Vernon Davis.  Kapernick and Davis put on a scintillating performance in the first half against the Cardinals.  The duo connected 7 times for 171 yards and two touchdowns in that half alone.  This is big step for the 49ers offensive.  It shows that they are finally starting to formulate a balance offensively that Greg Roman has been trying to establish all season.  It’s still a long way to go from the cohesion that the 49ers showed last season, but this is a start.

On the flip side of the ball, the 49ers defense showcased the consummate attitude of bend but never break.  Garnering that mentality, the 49ers caused four huge turnovers that were the catalyst in the victory over the Cardinals.  Those four turnovers lead directly to half of the 49ers 32 points.

I believe it was Aristotle that was quoted as saying, “the whole is greater than the sum of its parts.”

It’s been a collective effort for the defense during this past three week stretched.  Maligned by injuries and other issues the entire season, a group consisting of young and old and the known and the not well known, have stepped up to provide the grit this team has needed to survive through six games this season.  That’s the exact reason that makes that 4-2 overall record so astounding.  Guys by the name of Tony Jerod-Eddie and Demarcus Dobbs can step in during dire situations and provide the stability for the 49ers to become victorious.

Overall, there was a bit of everything to take in against the Cardinals.  There was a strong dose of the running game.  Kaepernick showed signs of  the quarterback he was last season.  Vernon Davis played an excellent game.  And although giving up some statistics, the defense is playing stout football. It’s an exciting thing to watch right now.  Nerve wracking…..most definitely, but with the 49ers as a whole finding their stride through all of these injuries and a group of healthy players looking to contribute in the near future, the outlook for the rest of this season looks extremely bright.
