San Francisco 49ers A Solid Road Favorite Against New York Jets

The San Francisco 49ers will look to rebound from their first defeat of the season a week ago when they travel to New York to take on the Jets Sunday. According to the NFL odds, the 49ers are 4-point favorites with the over/under listed at 40.5.

The 49ers were widely-regarded as the best team in the NFL following their pair of impressive wins to start the season, but the road to a presumptive division title hit a bump in the road last week when the 49ers were upended by the Minnesota Vikings as 6.5-point road favorites 24-13.

Quarterback Alex Smith was limited to 204 yards passing against the Vikings, but the 49ers aerial attack figures to benefit greatly this week with the loss of Jets’ All-Pro cornerback Darrel Revis, who suffered a torn ACL last week and is out for the season.

Despite the hiccup a week ago,the 49ers have the ingredients—a strong running game and aggressive defense—that typically result in success in the NFL. Led by running back Frank Gore, the 49ers are fifth in the NFL with 141 rushing yards a game and its defense is full of play-makers that create turnovers and generally wreak havoc on their opponents.

Gore could be set for a particularly big game as the Jets defense is giving up 149 yards on the ground. New York was especially dreadful against the run in their win against the Dolphins last week. Look for the 49ers to feed the Jets a heavy-dose of Gore and company.

The 49ers are also expecting a boost with the returns of wide receiver Ted Ginn Jr. and running back Brandon Jacobs, both of whom have missed San Francisco’s first three games with injuries.

The 49ers took the unusual step this week of practicing in Dayton, Ohio, instead of returning home following the Minnesota game and then heading back east for a cross-country trip to New York. San Francisco head coach Jim Harbaugh rarely misses a trick so look his squad to bounce-back in a big way against the Jets.
